My old Australian cattle dog keeps fighting with my pitbull? You think i should give it to the shelter?

You're a poor dog owner if u recognize that u have a problem, but instead of remaining loyal to ur dog & correcting the problem, u decide that u will pawn ur problem off on the animal shelter. I can not believe that u would even consider abandoning ur dog of 13 years at the animal shelter. When ur pit bull gets old, & gets grumpy the way old dogs do, r u going to dump that one off too? Maybe when u get old, arthritic, & grumpy, this is what ur family will do to you.

AMEN Pepy!
This is the dog who has been ur loyal friend for 13 years & u want to give it to a shelter? At this age the only thing they will do is euthanize! So essentially, u want to kill ur dog because u have a new one.

I agree with the medical problem. At least take the time to find out what the issue is. You at least owe ur dog that!

Edit: Just so u know, deafness & blindness can be common in very old ACDs. Your dog may be cranky because the younger dog bothers him when he can barely see or hear.

All I can say is if you would abandon a dog that you've had for 13 years over one that you've had for 3 years, then you are completely heartless. You know he will be euthanized, and he will die afraid and thinking of you and why you've left him.If you need to give up one of the dogs, give up the younger one,as it would adjust better to a new family,or just keep the dogs separated.

take your cattle dog to the vet and cross out the possability of a medical problem. If the older dog is only attacking the pup at certain times he is only trying to establish that he is the more dominate one. Do everything with the cattledog first. acknowledge it first when you get home, feed it first ect. then it wo not see the pup as a threat to his/her dominace they will get over it.

When u take on the responsibility for a pet animal it is for the life of the animal. Dogs do not just simply forget u & secondly such an old dog is highly unlikely to be chosen at a shelter. Thousands of young & old dogs r put to death each year. I am assuming u at least care a little for this pet since it has been with u so long. If the dogs r aggressive together keep them apart. One in one room & the other in another. It is kind of a hassle, like juggling around. Get some help with training. If u feel u must get rid of a dog, the pit, being younger & of a breed that is popular may have a slightly better chance at a shelter. Or locate a good private shelter that will care for the dog until a new home can be found. Not all of these places r of good quality so take ur time & look at the place u r going to leave ur pet. DO NOT just leave the dog at the shelter in the cage with no info..such dogs r very rarely adopted because shelter knows nothing about the animal. Adult dogs may be given 48 hrs to be adopted in big cities..old dogs may be put to sleep right away. I am not trying to scare u but city shelters do the best they can with limited space & funds. The best thing to do is internet research or talk to ur vet about how to help ur dogs get along.

well your cattle dog is probably jealous
if it is biting other people
i believe u should take it to the pound but
if it goes it will probably be put down i had the same prob and we took him to the pound and he got a good home after all so its up to what u want (i would take it the pound so it dose not harm others)

The cattle dog is asserting his dominance and he feels threatened. Get rid of the puppy and I think the old dog will be back to normal. For just a trial run, take the puppy away to somewhere else and do not visit him because the old dog will smell his scent on you and maybe attack you. Wait until the old dog is gone before getting another dog. The puppy probably wants to play and the old dog doesn't. In my opinion the puppy is the problem.

My Australian is 12 & he too is very territorial. How long have u had the Pitt? I would get rid of the newcomer first, but before that I would try a more gradual introduction. Keep a baby gate or something up keeping them apart while still allowing them to slowly acclimate to each other. Give ur Aussie reassurance that he is still the Alpha in the home. You do know it will be much more difficult to place the 13 year old than the pup---right? Give it a little time before making any final decision.

A good dog trainer can help you with the situation. It would be worth a private session. Old dogs do not like puppies much. He will do better when the puppy gets older. The old dog thinks he has to reestablish his place in the home. Let him know you are top dog not him and he will relax.

let the vet see the dog
do not give to much attention to the pitball
and do not give it to the shelter you just got to help it out

He is 13. You give him to a shelter, they're never going to be able to adopt him. When u purchased him, or acquired him, no matter how u did so, it was ur responsibility to give him a forever home. He probably is not a fan of a new puppy in the house, u may very well just need to keep them separate for a while- he does not have a terribly HUGE amount of time left. You may also consider a behaviorist to assist & see just how bad they r fighting. It is common for dogs to bicker their way into a pecking order, but it should never be a severe fight where someone could injured. A vet may also be a wise option, he may have something going on that is making him uncomfortable (therefor irritable, kind of like when u have a stomach ache & u get snippy) especially since he is a senior.

Have you had this dog for 13 years??? And this is new behavior??? If so this dog needs to see a vet first. This could be a sign of a medical problem. Have the dog checked but a vet before you do anything crazy.
